I’ve been lucky enough to work alongside the ridiculously talented Steve Attridge, yes, that Steve Attridge, the man who’s written for top telly dramas like Holby City and Hollyoaks, and who also happens to be a cracking author in his own right. He’s one of those rare breeds who can switch from gritty drama to wickedly sharp humour without breaking wind…I mean stride. Quite frankly, I’m half-convinced he’s got a secret dopp
elganger chained to a desk doing half the work.
What’s really impressed me is how he’s managed to inject gallows humour into what is, let’s face it, a deeply traumatic true story. It’s a fine art, making people laugh without undercutting the gravity of the events, and he’s nailed it. It’s my kind of humour, dark, dry, and with a bit of bite and of course that lime green mankini.
Episodes 1 and 2 are already in the bag and they’re nothing short of brilliant. Episode 3, the final instalment, is now underway, and I can’t lie… I’m giddy. Proper can’t-sit-still, checking-my-emails-like-a-woman-possessed giddy. This whole process has been surreal, emotional, and absolutely exhilarating.
If you’d told me a few years ago that my story would not only be in print but (potentially) heading for the screen, I’d have laughed you out of the room. Now? I’m living it, and it’s every bit as bonkers and bizarrely brilliant as you’d imagine.
